Where is the best place to find out the latest information about school closures?
The best place to check for school closures when the weather takes a turn for the worse is on this website, on the school's Facebook page and your text or email. We will do our best to post it to the morning television news (King 5, Komo, Kiro) . The earliest we post the information is 5:00 a.m. The latest time we post information or a change in status if conditions are rapidly deteriorating is 7:45 a.m.
How do I know if school will be closed?
While we do not match the Monroe School closure or delayed start schedule, in general if Snohomish, Monroe and Sultan (all 3) are closed, we are closed. If only one school closes but the others have a delayed start then it is likely we will open with a delayed start.
Is it possible for me to get a text message if you change your status from a delayed start to closed?
When weather and road conditions are deteriorating instead of improving, our status may change from opening with a delayed start to closing for the day. The decision is based on Monroe, Sultan and Snohomish announcing status changes. Any change in hours or closures will be updated prior to 7:50 a.m. Please refresh your browser and check the school website or the news station websites before heading out the door. Many parents find it convenient to receive a text message of a school status change by going to King5.com and signing up for School Closing Text Alerts.
What is your delayed start policy?
If road conditions allow, we will start one or two hour late with Before School Care opening at 8:00 and classes starting between 9:30-9:45. On rare occasions we will announce a 9:55 a.m. start for all classes with Before School Care opening at 9:00 a.m. This information will be posted on the school website and the news stations. Sometimes conditions from one neighborhood to the next will vary quite a bit. A hilly neighborhood may have a great deal of snow while families living in the valley get a light dusting. Please feel free to delay coming to school until the road is passable in your neighborhood on these winter weather days.
Do you ever cancel classes after school has begun?
We seldom cancel classes once the school day has begun unless weather conditions rapidly change. Your child's teacher will call you at home, on your cell phone and or at work to notify you if we are closing early. Any student unable to be picked up would remain at school in Room A2 with a staff member until you are safely able to arrive. If a neighbor or friend is picking up your child and is not already on your emergency pick-up list, please call the classroom direct line at 794-0827 to speak to the teacher.
Often my neighborhood doesn’t have power after a storm. How do I know if you are open when other schools are closed or starting late?
While power may go out in the surrounding areas, power at school seldom if ever goes out. The best way to stay current when your neighborhood lacks power is to use your smart phone to check the school's website , Facebook or your email.
If there is a flood do you close?
Every few years a fall storm may cause flooding problems in the low lying areas of the Skykomish Valley. Where our school is located it does not flood. If the major roadways in and out of Monroe are open we will make every effort to open on time. Families living towards Duvall, certain areas of Sultan, and or along the Old Monroe Snohomish Road may have difficulty navigating flooded roadways. Roads often quickly improve as flood waters subside. Your child is welcome to come late if needed.
If there is an earthquake do you close?
If overnight earthquake tremors caused no damage to the building or roads we are open. If the earthquake happens while school is in session we follow a standard safety procedure to assess if the building is safe to occupy. If it is not, we will notify you by calling your home, your cell phone, your workplace and your emergency contact numbers as needed. If the earthquake causes severe damage we follow our emergency preparation plan and would set up a Reconciliation Station in front of Building B. Your child would remain safely at school until you arrived. You would then go directly to the Reconciliation Station and check in with a staff member.
