Writing Targets

Writing - Grade 4

Writing Strands, Learning Targets, and Elements

Strand 1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

Learning Target 1.1- Develop concept and design:

  • Element 1- Develop a topic or theme;
  • Element 2 - Organize thoughts around a clear beginning, middle, and end;
  • Element 3 - Use transitional sentences and phrases to connect related ideas;
  • Element 4 - Write coherently and effectively.

Learning Target 1.2 - Use style appropriate to the audience and purpose:

  • Element 1 - Use voice, word choice, and sentence fluency for intended style.

Learning Target 1.3 - Apply writing conventions:

  • Element 1 - Know and applies correct spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and capitalization.

Strand 2: The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.

Learning Target 2.1 - Write to different audiences.

Learning Target 2.2 - Write for different purposes such as:

  • Element 1 - Telling stories;
  • Element 2 - Presenting analytical responses to literature;
  • Element 3 - Conveying technical information;
  • Element 4 - Completing a team project;
  • Element 5 - Explaining concepts and procedures;
  • Element 6 - Persuading.

Learning Target 2.3 - Write in a variety of forms including:

  • Element 1 - Narratives, journals, poems, essays, stories, and technical writing.

Learning Target 2.4 - Write for career applications.

Strand 3: The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process. Note: These learning targets will be assessed in classroom-based evaluation.

Learning Target 3.1 - Prewrite:

  • Element 1 - Generate ideas;
  • Element 2 - Gathers information.

Learning Target 3.2 - Draft:

  • Element 1 - Elaborate on a topic and supporting details.

Learning Target 3.3 - Revise:

  • Element 1- Collect input;
  • Element 2 - Enhance style.

Learning Target 3.4 - Edit:

  • Element 1 - Use resources to correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and usage.

Learning Target 3.5 - Publish:

  • Element 1 - Select a publishing form;
  • Element 2 Produce a completed writing project to share with chosen audience.

Strand 4: The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

Learning Target 4.1 - Assess own strengths and needs for improvement:

  • Element 1 - As a writer, analyzes effective writing;
  • Element 2 - Sets goals for improvement.

Learning Target 4.2 - Seek and offer feedback:

  • Element 1 - Seek and use feedback to improve writing;
  • Element 2 Offer suggestions and comments to others.
