Mathematics Content Strands and Learning Targets
Strand 1: Number sense (NS).
Learning Target NS01 - (Number and Number Theory) Identify and illustrate whole numbers and fractions in a variety of forms and representations, using pictures, models, and symbols; identify and illustrate properties of whole numbers (e.g. break down [decompose] combine, pattern/sequence, commutative properties of addition and multiplication, non-commutative property of subtraction).
Learning Target NS02 - (Numeration) Demonstrate an understanding of place value and magnitude in identifying, ordering, and comparing whole numbers and common or simple fractions.
Learning Target NS03 - (Conceptual Understanding of Operations) Demonstrate an understanding of whole number operations.
Learning Target NS04 - (Computation) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
Learning Target NS05 - (Estimation) Determine appropriateness of estimation and use estimation to predict computation results and determine reasonableness of answers.
Learning Target NS06* - (Mental Arithmetic and Tools) Use mental arithmetic, pencil and paper, and/or calculators as appropriate to the task.
Strand 2: Measurement (ME).
Learning Target ME01 - (Attributes and Dimensions) Describe and compare objects and measurable attributes of objects (such as length, perimeter, area, volume or capacity, angle, weight, money, and temperature) in standard units.
Learning Target ME02 - (Approximation and Precision) Use estimation to predict or determine the reasonableness of measurements and to obtain reasonable approximations.
Learning Target ME03 - (Systems and Precision) Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate uses of standard and nonstandard units of measure and the approximate nature of measurement.
Learning Target ME04 - (Tools and Procedures) Select, use, and evaluate appropriate instruments, units (standard or nonstandard), and procedures for measuring time, money, length, area, volume, weight, and temperature.
Strand 3: Geometric sense (GS).
Learning Target GS01 - (Shape and Dimension) Identify, describe, sort, and compare geometric figures using their attributes; construct geometric figures.
Learning Target GS02 - (Location) Identify and describe the relative location of objects to one another; identify and describe the location of objects on a location grid (map, grid, number line).
Learning Target GS03 - (Properties and Relationships) Identify, describe, and compare parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines, as well as congruent, symmetrical, and similar figures, in two-dimensional and real-world constructions.
Learning Target GS04 - (Transformations) Identify and construct simple geometric transformations using slides (translations), flips (reflections), or turns (rotations) on grids or geoboards (sans coordinates).
Learning Target GS05* - (Environmental Geometry) Uses attributes of shape and size to describe geometric shapes in the environment.
Strand 4: Probability and statistics (PS).
Learning Target PS01 - (Probability and Experimentation) Predict, show, and evaluate, the possible outcomes and probabilities of simple experiments and activities; distinguish between certain and uncertain events; and compare predictions to experimental results.
Learning Target PS02 - (Data Collection) Identify, describe, and evaluate methods for the effective collection of data.
Learning Target PS03 - (Data Organization and Analysis) Organize, analyze, and display data in graphs, tables, charts, and other pictorial representations (e.g. icons); make and evaluate inferences from data and experimental results.
Learning Target PS04 - (Central Tendency) Identify, find, and use defined measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and other characteristics to describe a set or sets of data and sample populations.
Learning Target PS05* - (Collect Data) Collect, organize, analyze, and display data in graphs, tables, charts, and other pictorial representations.
Learning Target PS06* - (Testing Conjectures) Make inferences and predictions based on analysis of problem situations: test conjectures and inferences.
Strand 5: Algebraic sense (AS).
Learning Target AS01 - (Patterns) Recognize, create, and extend patterns of objects and numbers.
Learning Target AS02 - (Representation) Identify and use appropriate symbols/notation to represent number patterns and operations and to translate situations into mathematical symbols.
Learning Target AS03 - (Operations) Solve simple equations at the pictorial level; evaluate simple expressions.
Process Strands and Learning Targets Strand 6: Solving problems and reasons logically (SR).
Learning Target SR01 - (Investigate Situations and Define Problems) Define problems, by identifying the question(s) to be answered (that which is unknown and to be made known through problem solution) and including the known information, missing information, or extraneous information.
Learning Target SR02 - (Construct Solutions) Organize relevant information; select and use appropriate tools, strategies, concepts, and procedures to construct solutions.
Learning Target SR03 - (Analysis) Compare and contrast, interpret information from familiar situations.
Learning Target SR04 - (Predict and Verify Results) Make conjectures and inferences, draw conclusions based on analysis of problem situations; support arguments and justify results; check for reasonableness of results, evaluate procedures and results; validate thinking and mathematical ideas using models, known facts, patterns, relationships.
Learning Target SR05 - (Solution and Justification) Organize relevant information; select and use appropriate tools, strategies, concepts, and procedures to construct solutions, then support arguments and justify results, check for reasonableness of results, evaluate procedures and results, and/or validate thinking and mathematical ideas using models, known facts, patterns, relationships.
Strand 7: Communicating understanding (CU).
Learning Target CU01 - (Planning) Create and follow a simple plan for collecting information.
Learning Target CU02 - (Collection of Information) Use reading, listening, and observation skills to gather extract, and interpret mathematical information from a variety of sources ‹ pictures, diagrams, models, text, and symbolic representations.
Learning Target CU03 - (Organize, Represent, and Express) Clearly represent, organize, and express mathematical information, understandings, and ideas using accurate and appropriate models, tables, charts, graphs, written reflections, and algebraic notation, and explain ideas in ways appropriate to the given audience.

Strand 8: Making connections (MC).
Learning Target MC01 - (Connections among Mathematical Concepts and Procedures and between Different Mathematical Representations) Relate and use conceptual and procedural understandings among a variety of mathematical content areas (number sense, measurement, geometric sense, probability, statistics, and algebraic sense); relate and use equivalent mathematical models and representations.
